The English Immersion Program has everything you need to help you get started today. Attend some of our events today and get an idea of how amazing and fun learning could be.
Since 2008, we’ve been guiding young African leaders on their language immersion journeys and recently, we have been joined by a group of students from Cohort 12, Group E. This change has brought about four new innovations— creating the best possible customer experience.
This idea entails introducing written and oral tests before the beginning of the English immersion program as a way of evaluating the English proficiency levels of non-anglophone students. These tests should then be used to place the students in different English immersion classes according to their proficiencies to maximize learning. These placements enable the teachers to focus their contents on the student’s needs.
The English immersion program is designed to enable students from non-anglophone backgrounds to learn English for academic discourse and engagement with educational material. To this effect, we recommend that the EIP replace half of all its written assessments with debates, which still allow the students to engage in academic discourse and improve their English speaking skills.
This idea explores the possibility for the EIP to increase the time spent during the English immersion program. We want to use this extra time (after the students have learned a great deal of English) to simulate what their class sessions after resumption would feel like (a program similar to PAVE). This experience would prepare students for the challenges of learning in a language they aren’t proficient in.
We will partner with student life and wellness to pair students that are proficient in different languages ( ideally, English speaking students with either French/Kinyarwanda speaking students) and create informal opportunities (like brunch, game activities, movie activities and others) for them to bond, engage in casual conversation and hopefully form friendships that push non-anglophone students to speak more English in informal settings.
The African Leadership University has a persistent issue of language barriers that hinders smooth communication between its students, facilitators, and the communities around them, this in turn prevents the community from maximizing learning opportunities and facilitating social interactions.
To better aid the bridging of the language barriers at the African Leadership University, we will focus on improving the English Immersion Program(EIP). Through; the introduction of English placement tests, the introduction of debates, increasing the time spent in English immersion before resumption and creating a language buddy system.
